The Anthropometric Status of Farming households in Kogi State, Nigeria AgEcon
Adewumi, Matthew Olaniyi; Babatunde, Raphael O.; Olufunke, Ayodele.
A country needs a well nourished population of children for a productive future. Malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child morbidity and mortality; therefore, combating malnutrition in our communities should be an issue to policy makers. With the use of anthropometric indices derived from survey data collected from 150 randomly selected children from 150 farming households in Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, this study assessed malnutrition of children in the Central part of Nigeria. Logit model was used to examine the relationship between some anthropometric indices and the general characteristics of the household and the children. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information from the sampled households. The...

Self-Help Farmer Cooperatives’ Management of Natural Resources for Sustainable Development in Southwest Nigeria AgEcon
Adeyemo, Remi.
There is ample evidence that much of Africa fails to meet basic criteria of agricultural sustainable development and environmental preservation. The objective of this study was to explore the management of natural resources by self-help farmer cooperatives. The study was carried out in five local government areas of Southwest Nigeria. These local government areas are forest zones covered by derived savannah. The raining season normally starts around April and ends in October/November, followed by a dry season. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people. Several methods were used to collect information. These included group discussions and questionnaires. Results from the study show that women have played a major role in almost every aspect of...

Strengthening Pluralistic Agricultural Information Delivery Systems in India AgEcon
Adhiguru, P.; Birthal, Pratap Singh; Kumar, B. Ganesh.
The study on agricultural information flow has revealed that only 40 per cent farm households access information from one or the other source. The popular information sources among farmers have been reported to be fellow progressive farmers and input dealers, followed by mass media. The public extension system has been found to be accessed by only 5.7 per cent households. Only 4.8 per cent of the small farmers have access to public extension workers as compared to 12.4 per cent of large farmers. The sector-wise study on the type of information, sought has revealed that a majority of the farmers have sought information on seed (32-55%) in the cultivation sector; on health care (26-54 %) in animal husbandry; and on management and marketing (8-46 %) in...

YIELD GUARANTEES AND THE PRODUCER WELFARE BENEFITS OF CROP INSURANCE AgEcon
Adhikari, Shyam; Knight, Thomas O.; Belasco, Eric J..
Crop yield and revenue insurance products with coverage based on actual production history (APH) yields dominate the U.S. Federal Crop Insurance Program. The APH yield, which plays a critical role in determining the coverage offered to producers, is based on a small sample of historical yields for the insured unit. The properties of this yield measure are critical in determining the value of the insurance to producers. Sampling error in APH yields has the potential to lead to over-insurance in some years and under-insurance in other years. Premiums, which are in part determined by the ratio of the APH yield to the county reference yield, are also affected by variations in APH yields. Congress has enacted two measures, yield substitution and yield floors,...

Adiguzel,S.
Scorpion stings constitute a common type of accident in Turkey due to the geographic location, climate and socioeconomic structure of this country. Moreover, envenomation cases are considered a public health problem throughout Turkey. Based on data in the literature, the main clinical features of scorpion envenomations are defined as systemic manifestations including sweating, hypertension and vomiting, and among prominent causes of death are cardiorespiratory manifestations, toxic myocarditis and pulmonary edema. The most important health-threatening scorpions found in Turkey are: Androctonus crassicauda, Leiurus quinquestriatus, Mesobuthus gibbosus and Mesobuthus eupeus, all of which belong to the Buthidae family. This study indicates that there is no...

The Inconvenience Cost: A Portfolio Approach to Non-Convergence Between Cash and Futures Prices AgEcon
Adjemian, Michael K.; Kuethe, Todd H.; Kunda, Eugene L..
Cash and futures prices should reach equality, or converge, upon contract maturity. Traders can impose convergence during the delivery month through arbitrage behavior: either making or taking delivery on futures contracts. If convergence is not predictable, a futures market fails to provide a clear storage signal to potential inventory holders and reduces the attractiveness of hedging. Recent convergence problems in domestic commodity markets demonstrate the existence of persistent, significant arbitrage opportunities over the second half of the last decade. Yet, terminal elevator operators—perhaps the only participants with the capacity to do so—have not arbitraged away these riskless returns by making enough deliveries. This model demonstrates...

The abiotic environment of Heliamphora nutans (Sarraceniaceae): pedological and microclimatic observations on Roraima Tepui BABT
Adlassnig,Wolfram; Pranji,Kornelija; Mayer,Edith; Steinhauser,Georg; Hejjas,Flora; Lichtscheidl,Irene K..
The aim of this study was the study of the abiotic environment of the carnivorous pitcher plant Heliamphora nutans (Sarraceniaceae), including the microclimate and the geochemistry of the soil of the growing sites on Roraima Tepui and discuss their relevance within the recent model of carnivorous plant ecology. The soil was peaty and low in nutrients. The microclimate on the site was very balanced, with moderately cool temperatures, a constant high humidity and very low wind speed. Heliamphora was not exposed to any recognizable climatic stress. Previous macroclimatic measurements reflected the growth conditions of Heliamphora only incorrectly, since humidity decreased drastically with height. The apparent conflict with the common model of carnivorous...

Effect of pasture botanical composition on milk composition in organic production Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen; Dahl, A.V.; Vae, A.H.; Thuen, E.; Garmo, T.; Krogh-Jensen, S.; Hansen-Møller, J.; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Milk samples from sixteen Norwegian Red dairy cows grazing mixed swards of either grass-red clover (GR) or mixed swards of sown and unsown species of grass, clover and other herbs (GCH) were collected during four periods. Both pastures were organically managed. Pasture botanical composition had no effect on milk fat, protein or vitamin concentration and only minor effects on fatty acid composition. Milk from GR had higher concentrations of the phytoestrogens equol, genistein and biochanin A than the milk from GCH. Concentrations of equol in milk from GR were higher than concentrations reported from experiments with red clover silage. The oxidative stability of the milk lipids was not affected by pasture type.

Forage botanical and chemical composition on dairy farms with different grassland systems and production systems Organic Eprints
Adler, Steffen; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Thirty-two dairy farms in Middle-Norway with different grassland systems (short-term (<4 years) grassland (S) or long-term (>7 years) grassland (L)) and different production systems (organic (O) or conventional (C)) were compared in a field study in 2007. In a principal component analysis on variables including farm details, botanical composition and chemical forage composition, the farms were separated into organic and conventional farms with the exception of one farm. Amongst the organic farms most SO farms were distinguished from LO farms. Concentration of forage crude protein was positively correlated with proportion of grass. Concentration of non-fibrous carbohydrates, in vitro digestibility and net energy lactation was positively correlated...

Sequential use of ammonium and leucine as nitrogen sources during growth of Geotrichum candidum on a glucose based medium Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Adour,Lydia; Bude,Florence; Amrane,Abdeltif.
Geotrichum candidum growth on ammonium and leucine as nitrogen sources and glucose as a carbon source was examined. A clear preference of G. candidum for ammonium over leucine as a nitrogen source was shown. Indeed, ammonium was completely exhausted at the end of exponential growth after less than 35 hrs of culture; in contrast only 5% of leucine was concomitantly assimilated. Growth continued at slower rates on glucose and leucine as carbon and nitrogen sources respectively, and at the end of culture (185 hrs), leucine was completely exhausted.

Competitive Relationship of Three Warm-Season Turfgrass Species AgEcon
Adrian, John L., Jr.; Duffy, Patricia A.; Lloyd, Michael.
The competitive position of three warm-season turf species commonly grown in the South (bermudagrass, centipedegrass, and zoysiagrass) is evaluated for a farm with 100 acres available to allocate to turfgrass-sod production. A multiperiod linear programming model is used to determine optimal mixes of grasses and resulting net returns for a seven-year planning horizon. Within current observable price ranges, variation in the prices of the different grasses has little impact on the profit-maximizing combination of grasses. Bermudagrass, with the shorter production cycle and positive influence on cash flow, dominates the higher-valued, longer-production-cycle alternative grasses. Availability of initial money capital from internal sources does not alter the...
